College Enrollment Continues 8-Year Slide - PQ for Undergrads

College Enrollment Continues 8-Year Slide by: Nathan Allen on May 31, 2019 | 0 Comments Comments 317 Views May 31, 2019College enrollment dipped again this spring, according to data published yesterday (May 30) by the National Student Clearinghouse. Its the eighth year in a row enrollment at U.S. colleges has decreased, albeit at a slower rate (1.7%) compared to last year (1.8%). The Clearinghouse Research Center reports enrollment data every December and May. This springs 1.7% drop accounts for about 300,000 students and brings total college enrollment to just over 17.5 million. The data represents 97% of the countrys Title IV degree-granting institutions.Declines were not equal across types of institutions. For example, four-year for-profit universities saw enrollment plunge by 19.7% while four-year public schools saw a decrease of just .9%. Four-year private nonprofit institutions actually saw an increase of 3.2%, but according to the Clearinghouses report, that was due to a large for-profit institution turning to nonprofit status. And two-year public colleges dropped by 3.4%.While both full-time and part-time college enrollment has decreased, part-time enrollment has dropped more overall. Across all sectors of institutions, full-time enrollment has dropped by just 1% while part-time has decreased by 2.7%. However, like the overall enrollment, different institutions are experiencing different trends. For example, for four-year public institutions, full-time enrollment has dropped .7% while part-time has declined 1.3%. But for four-year for-profit and two-year public institutes, full-time rates have dropped more so than part-time. At four-year for-profit colleges, full-time enrollment fell 21.8% versus 16% for part-time students. Two-year public universities had smaller drops at -4.7% for full-time and -2.6% for part-time.In terms of age, traditional college students (18- to 24-years-old) have declined in enrollments more than those under 18 and above 24 . Enrollment has actually climbed for students under 18 by 1.6% across all sectors. Meanwhile, it has dropped for 18- to 24-year-olds by 2.4% and .8% for students above 24.Men are enrolling less in college compared to women, the data shows, widening the gender gap of college educated people. Across all sectors, male enrollment dropped by 2.8%, while female enrollment dropped just .8%. Currently, the Clearinghouse data says, a little more than 7.3 million men are enrolled in college compared to nearly 10.2 million women currently enrolled in a higher education institution. The widest gap among sectors is in four-year public universities where almost one million more women are enrolled. Interestingly, this is the first year since before 2017 that female enrollment has dropped at four-year public universities. In spring 2017, women enrolled .7% more than spring 2016 and in spring 2018, the enrollment increased by .2%. Meanwhile, the rate at which men are enrolling less has only increas ed from -.3% in 2017 to -.6% in 2018 to 1.7% this year.Perhaps more concerning for higher education institutions is the upcoming decline in college-aged students in the U.S. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the U.S. birth-rate peaked at 4.32 million births in 2007 and has dropped consistently since then to 3.79 million in 2018. Meaning, starting in 2025, the population of 18-year-olds in the country will begin decreasing, naturally making the college enrollment smaller.DONT MISS: WHAT PARENTS CAN MAKE OF THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS SCANDAL or WHAT PARENTS SHOULD (AND SHOULD NOT DO) TO GET THEIR CHILD INTO COLLEGE Page 1 of 11

Personal Statement On Health Care - 964 Words

For as long as I could remember my ultimate goal in life has always had to deal with health care; I want to help as many people as I can in a variety of different aspects. Regardless if it is nursing or a physician assistant this is a career choice I’ve always saw myself pursuing. I could easily see myself waking up everyday and surrounding myself in a hospital setting; I’m not sure what it is but I enjoy that fast pace environment the hospital has and the variety of different environments I could put myself in while I take care of my patients. I hope to have personal, one on one relationships with patients because I find establishing close relationships with any patient you have helps in regards to their own comfort. I’m mildly content with being managed, I do not necessary want to manage others; I find I enjoy having a structure and someone to tell me what I am doing right or wrong appose to it being myself correcting my own actions without any guidance. As muc h as we would like to believe, since it is the twenty first century, race and ethnicity would never factor into the quality of an individual’s care, it unfortunately till this day still affects some individuals. There are countless of reports submit daily on races such as black and Latino. A Marxist And Feminist Literary Criticism - 1243 Words

A Marxist and Feminist Literary Criticism Being a single woman with a family to support in the 1930’s was not an easy job. Especially when society had so many chips stacked against them. Tillie Olsen’s â€Å"I stand Here Ironing† is a short story that addresses feminine social disorders and inequalities as well as economic disadvantages that people of lower circumstances have to overcome to survive. In the short story it is basically an autobiography of Tillie Olsen’s life told by the narrator (Emily’s mother). Throughout the story the narrator is reflecting the way she brought up her daughter during a depression and feminist era. She feels very regretful reflecting 19 years late because of the decisions she was forced to make because of the absence of Emily’s father. This story can be seen in a feminist perspective as well as a Marxist perspective; even though they are very different from one another both perspectives help interpret Tillie Olsen’s short story. The Marxist pe rspective helps illuminate Tillie Olsen’s â€Å"I stand Here Ironing† when the narrator explains how the capital system negatively affected Emily and her Family. In a feminist perspective the narrator describes her different encounters with men that abandoned her; causing her to have to take on a male dominated role. Because of the societal characteristic she had to take on it caused her to turn away from her daughter in order to survive. Illegal Immigration Essay - 2615 Words

Illegal immigration is a grave issue that affects everyone in the world. Illegal immigration is the process of an alien, or non-citizen, who has entered a country without government permission or stayed beyond the termination date of a visa (Free Online Law Dictionary). The flow of illegal immigrants is almost entirely from countries of lower socioeconomic levels to countries of higher socioeconomic levels. Basically, foreigners tend to migrate from undeveloped countries to developed countries. Many from Africa, an undeveloped continent, illegally migrate to Europe, a developed continent, in search of opportunities. Similarly, many Mexicans illegally cross the American border every month in search of the American dream (The Telegraph,†¦show more content†¦These kind of jobs are usually labor intensive and don’t attract many employees. For instance, many illegal immigrants decide to work in jobs that don’t require work permits. The landscape and construction are popular with immigrants as there are generally no requirements but hard labor. Other employment areas include restaurants (dish washing), hospitality, prostitution, agriculture, and domestic services. Besides in search of better economic opportunities, people illegally migrate to foreign nations due to family problems, war, overpopulation, or illness. There are some countries in the world that are becoming overpopulated and face a risk of limited resources and production. This eventually causes people to illegally immigrate to less populated countries where there is no risk of living. For example, China is a nation that is powerful, resourceful, and wealthy; yet it faces a problem of overpopulation. As a result, Chinese tend to illegally immigrate to other foreign countries to escape from the overpopulation they face in their home country (Mooney, et al., 1997). This issue rose as of undeveloped countries that were unable to provide a good standard of life for their citizens to a g rowing worldwide issue. Teaching Philosophy Statement Example For Students

Teaching Philosophy Statement Teaching is a profession which allows one to influence many lives. It is because of this opportunity to touch lives that I have decided to enter the teaching profession. I understand that the benefits of this profession are mostly intrinsic as opposed to extrinsic, yet the thought of inspiring students to learn drives me closer to the teaching profession. Monetary gain from a certain profession is minimal compared to the feeling that at the end of the day you have touched someone’s life. To summarize, the reason that I am entering the teaching profession, is my conviction to touch lives. Full of life and well lit will be two ways of describing my classroom. Nothing is more depressing than working in a dimly lit room. I hope to fill the walls with a few bulletin boards and yet not make the room look crowded and cluttered. The clock will be placed at the front of the room so the students will be able to pace themselves and see it clearly. I will seat in a traditional manor but allow the students to sit were they like. Once in the classroom, I feel my teaching style will lean toward that of a traditionalist. If one was to ask any college instructor in America to compare the high school graduate of today with the graduate of twenty years ago, they would almost always reply, â€Å" The student twenty years ago was more equipped for college than the student of today.† Upon further exploration, I found that many college level math courses were taught in the eighth and ninth grades in the early seventies. What does this have to do with me being a traditionalist you ask? America has left behind many of the great principles of education which made this nation great. In general our society is struggling from a lack of absolutes values. Examples like the teaching of Ebonics in California and the lack of standards in education today reveal a weak backbone of many school boards today. I will at the beginning of each year lay out the rules very clearly. In my experience at a private school, students, when they know what is expected of them, will thrive under these kinds of strict guidelines. Be firm and be absolute yet show compassion to each student and success will be eminent. While I will adopt many of the views of a traditionalist, I also will be eclectic in many areas of the teaching process. I would like to implement positive discipline approaches for minor offences, assuming the position of a progressive teacher. Regarding minor offenses, such as throwing paper or talking out of turn, I would hesitate before using the office. I feel that involving the office in every violation would lead to the child becoming somewhat immune to the office. Also the idea of allowing stdents to assist in problem solving as opposed to straight plain lectures all the time wold seem beneficial to me. In this aspect my teaching style would lean toward more of afacilitating style. I wholly support standardized testing in the educational process. While understanding that many teachers feel limited in having a restricted curriculum, I think standards are the only real way of checking progress of students at different stages of development. It is a known fact that we have a certain percentage of high school kids who can not read, write, or articulate themselves in a manner that would be acceptable for their age. The opposition to standards is that some kids do not test well and that the curriculum is somewhat limited. Realizing the validity of this point, I still argue a student should not proceed academically until he or she has mastered a particular concept. Standards is a proven way to catch the child who needs extra help or has not mastered the concept. .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .postImageUrl , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:hover , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:visited , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:active { border:0!important; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:active , .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028 .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u11f7fa1fdf7686062b1a0c0b59ee0028:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Comparing Billy Liar with Chicago EssayWhen I enter the teaching profession I will be apt to join a union, but not apt to hide behind the union to keep my job. In essence, I do not want any trail lawyer keeping me employed when I have lost the desire to do my job. I can remember the few bad teachers I had throughout school and the negative impact they had on the learning process. Ms. Jane Doe (who was so old that she allowed everyone to turn in the same essay paper) and Mr. Doe (who had the students write the definitions at the end of every social studies chapter while he tracked his favorite hobbies) had a traumatic effect on hundreds of students who passed through the sc hool system. They didn’t want to be there and yet no one could run them off because of seniority or fear of being sued. Why were these people in the profession? By teaching with passion and fire, I hope to inspire students to learn and be successful. In conclusion, teaching should be a passion to impart knowledge. My goal would be to give knowledge to my students and every day learn something from them. I’m not going in for fame or prestige but rather I am here for the love of knowledge and the tremendous reward of imparting that knowledge to others. When my student walks out of my classroom I pray that I change the way they view the world. My goal would be that each one feels my desire to enlighten them academically. Knowing that there are thousands of teachers out there doing there best in the struggle to educate, I still feel the urge to out and be the best I can be. Many of the oldtimers say, â€Å"Just wait until you get in the classroom with a bunch of thirteen year olds cussing and carrying on and whose parents don’t give a @!$#% and then we’ll see what’ll happen.† My reply to this is simply, â€Å"We’ll see, we’ll see.† So in every seminar I will attend or in every s taff meeting I am part of, I will be a continual learner. I will be faithful and do what I love.Teach! Teaching with fire! Teaching with passion! Teaching with compassion! I want to be a teacher.

The Uncanny Relationship of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Essay Example For Students

The Uncanny Relationship of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Essay They are two giants of movies of our times or the Modern Cinema. Together, the thaumaturgy they have created for large screen is surely worthy of treatment as it is the longest enduring partnership between an histrion and a manager boulder clay day of the month and that excessively merely to bring forth alone cinematic chef-d’oeuvres of their ain sort. Indeed the legendary Director Tim Burton and the fictile acting machine Jonny Depp are under treatment here. How and why have they managed to play together the most successful innings of all times? Who are they? What are the movies they have collaborated in? How do they believe about each other ‘s art? But the most of import of all the ideas would be that Why Tim Burton about ever depends on Johnny Depp and how predictably Mr Depp proves to be a Burton-magnet every bit? Why are they inseparable? My essay is traveling to research and throw a visible radiation on this alone partnership that is go oning to entertain us for th e old ages to come, how it is impacting the viewing audiences and critics likewise and if it is deserving practising this bond about every clip? Tim Burton has used his vision to ship on Hollywood genre filmmaking, garnering an international audience and fans. His work besides influences a immature coevals of creative persons working in movie, picture and in writing industries. Tim Burton: the name entirely enlivens up the images of Gothic landscapes, diabolic buffoons, and the drab pleasantness of a lone wolf fighting to happen his manner into un-accepting universe. Like Alfred Hitchcock before him, Tim Burton has become fabulous character, known as much for his physical visual aspects, alternately described as adorably passe, jerk smart, or dishevelled for its extremely stylized movies. His movies have been able to lift above both genre and account. The thoughts and the stuff that appear in his work are both cosmopolitan and timeless. His movies, in first topographic point, affect people emotionally instead than being rational. This resulted in Tim Burton going one of the film makers who based their movies on their personal visions, the other being Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubirck, David Lynch and Spike Lee. Timothy Walter â€Å"Tim† Burton was born ( 1958 ) and grew up in suburban California. He was into pulling and painting since early childhood together with a thing for films and that excessively, monster films. Trying his eldritch thoughts of â€Å"home-made† life through stop gesture in his back yard resulted in his first proper short came into being which was produced by Burton ‘s friend, Rick Heinrichs. Tim Burton managed to acquire screened and noticed at Chicago Film Festival. Following this, his first unrecorded action movie Hansel and Gratelfor Disney Channel was released. It sort of went about un-noticed and merely late has been un-earthed. Next was the live-action short Frankenweenie which got the attending of the American histrion Paul Ruebens who provided Burton the chance to happen his first characteristic based on Ruebens popular character ‘Pee-Wee Herman ‘ into the Pee-Wee ‘s BigAdventure ( 1985 ) which proved a box office success. When the clip came to do Edward Scissorhands, there were many considerations for chief function of the movie. One prominent of all was to project Tom Cruise, who was the top polishing star of the period who was about finalised for the movie, due to his star power, the movie studios needed. But Tim Burton and the manufacturer Denise di Novi fell for the auditioned, the world-weary telecasting star, Johnny Depp, who had ne’er done a characteristic before. John Christopher â€Å"Johnny† Depp was born ( 1963 ) in Kentucky, USA. He was largely known for strange and unusual characters, playing as a garage set instrumentalist in his early teens. He covered many a mile rocks while remaining within the music circles. His make-up creative person married woman introduced him to Nicolas Cage, and it was him who advised Depp to prosecute an acting calling. Harmonizing to Squidoo ( 2010 ), Depp ‘s endowment was foremost recognised in telecasting series 21 Jump Streetby audience and he was regarded as a adolescent graven image. Depp diverted his focal point to suited movie functions because of uncomfortable word picture in telecasting functions. It was so, when ‘Edward Scissorhands ‘ stepped into his life to alter his destiny forever. Depp recalls the memorable brush with Burton in his sole nowadays of prefaces for a book, â€Å"Burton on Burton† based on interviews of the manager, when he was n’t making much, instead stuck up with a telecasting series and after even completing it, its station injury. He received a book which referred to a narrative of male child with scissors for custodies. It was surely a alteration, a breath of fresh air that he got rather excited and obsessed with the book and read a couple times. Under-estimating his choice as a possible campaigner for the ‘Edward ‘, he went on to run into Burton and the manufacturer in LA. Post three hr long meeting, Depp remembers the idea of certainty of him non being the Edward of Burton ‘s movie. Weeks subsequently he could n’t believe his destiny when he got a call stating â€Å"you are Edward Scissorhands†. There was a way that seemed to be looking in forepart of Depp. Salisbury ( 2008 ) stated that after their first work together, i.e. Burton ‘s Edward Scissorhands ( 1990 ), both of them have taken their relation to bring forth some of the best work of their several callings. Johnny Depp is non merely lead by Burton but by his ain reading of a character, whether it is razor-fingered Edward Scissorhands, cross-dressing movie manager Ed Wood or creepy confectionery king Willy Wonka. They ‘ve since made five movies together including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ; the alive Corpse Bride, Depp making the voice over for lead character ) and, most late, Sweeney Todd. Harmonizing to Cortez ( 2004 ), Depp once more worked with Tim Burton in Ed Wood ( 1994 ) turn outing his genius and winning a. This film is one of the Burton ‘s extremely praised movies. In the film, other than Johnny Depp, there were some vivacious performing artists including Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi. Both of them, Depp and Burton, one time once more collaborated in 1999 in Sleepy Hollow. The movie was a hit at box office ; it was recognised as Burton ‘s extra-ordinary work instead than being seen as Depp ‘s star power, as stated by Cortez ( 2004 ). For the film, Depp incorporated some of his ain properties into the character of an officer, named Ichabod Crane holding a priggish nature, who is on to work out some cryptic slayings taken topographic point late in and around the town. Self Reflection EssayAt another topographic point, stated by Salisbury ( 1995 ), the most low and specifying comment comes from the histrion himself, â€Å"My life is my life because of Tim, † he one time declared. Same is the instance in their private lives. In order to analyze the inseparable nature of both the person professionally, we can non disregard the importance of their bonding on personal foreparts. The one time an indispensable relationship of an histrion and manager turned-friendship has now turned to something that is much more than mere friendship that holds a alone bond of trust and has personal life touch to it. Depp is now the Godfather to Burton ‘s four twelvemonth old kid. Fliping through the pages of memories, he remembers that â€Å"who would hold of all time thought it possible that their offspring would be singing on swing-sets together, or sharing toy autos, plaything monsters, and even potentially interchanging chicken syphilis? This is the d rive he ne’er imagined.† Salisbury ( 1995 ) stated that Depp showed his emotional side for the manager, â€Å"seeing Tim as proud dad is adequate to direct me into an uncontrollable crying jag, because, as with about everything, it is in the eyes. Tim ‘s eyes have ever shone: no inquiry about it, there was ever something aglow in those troubled/sad/weary voyeurs. But today, the eyes of old pal Tim are laser beam! Piercing, smiling contented eyes, with all of the gravitation of yester old ages, but bright with the hope of dramatic hereafter. This was non the instance earlier. There was a adult male with presumably everything- or so it seemed from the outside. But there was besides something uncomplete! † There have been legion statements on both Burton ‘s and Depp ‘s originative partnership on many degrees ; from newspapers to interviews or from books to online web logs. Some of the members of the populace, particularly the younger coevals see the â€Å"magical† movie relation of both the creative persons a spot overrated or in some instances, raging. But this sentiment evidently takes its birth from freedom of look of modern twenty-four hours and need non to be taken really earnestly as there is a significant sum of followings who can ne’er hold sufficiency of the consequences both Burton and Depp churn out. In this context, evidently the critics and the authors have more weighting and about all of them are the claping batch of their work. There are some exclusions as good like, although he is all congratulations for the gifted couple, but in one article for Radio Times the known movie author Andrew Collins expresses that he was relieved when ‘Alice i nWonderland ‘ ( to be released, march 2010 ) was announced that he realised that Depp could n’t take the rubric function. â€Å"But conjecture what? He ‘s playing the Mad Hatter. And after that, Burton plans to do Dark Shadows, a lamia story†¦starring Johnny Depp.† Commenting on his article were many, but one peculiar member of the populace responded to it like this: â€Å"This article is like stating that people should halt seting maple sirup on battercakes because people do it excessively frequently. Merely because they work together frequently does non intend the work that they accomplish together gets any worse. The battercakes still taste good. The films are still entertaining. They make astonishing films together so why should they halt? † By researching the â€Å"strategic† partnership of both the gifted 1s on most of the undertakings I would honestly state Why Not? I do non experience hesitant to show that it is no uncertainty a God-send bonding which has ne’er failed to divert and astonish us and I am of the sentiment that there is nil incorrect with it if they carry on to do more cinematic pieces together in future. While making that the least they can make, like they ever do, is to endeavor for their reputation and go on to bewilder the audiences by weaving more dreams. But still, being slightly good researched in my ain mode and by every bit esteeming the different statement I can non turn my dorsum to an interesting and of import remark at a movie web log by an unknown blogger and I will sum up my essay with that, â€Å"Just the fact that he used Ewan McGregor alternatively of Depp for Big Fish was reviewing and a large asset for the film to me. It ‘s like a painter make up one’s mind ing he ‘s merely traveling to utilize ruddy and yellow for the remainder of his calling, when I ‘d truly wish to see what he can make with some other colours.† Bibliography  · Answers ( 2010 ). â€Å"Tim Burton.† Available at hypertext transfer protocol: //www.answers.com/topic/tim-burton ;  · Boucher, G.
